Early Years 0-5 yrs

Who we see

Our early years service is for children between the ages of 0-5 years.

The child does not need to have a diagnosis to be referred to our service.

Where do we see them

We offer a range of online parent/carer support sessions which you may be signposted to. Further information on these sessions can be found here: Parent/Carer Support.

Occupational therapy assessments for young people within this service may be completed on a face-to-face basis in one of our clinics at City of Coventry Health Centre, however children can also be seen in nursery or at home dependent on the need identified.

What may happen when we see an Occupational Therapist (OT)

From birth to 5 years, children’s development lay the foundation of skills they will need to build on throughout their lives. Occupational therapy can support with developing gross and fine motor development, sensory difficulties, supporting play skills as well as supporting increasing independence with dressing skills and feeding in line with a child’s individual needs and developmental stage.

The assessment will focus on promotion of developmentally appropriate independent living skills, and those skills required for the nursery environment. This could Include:

  • Pre-Writing and fine motor skills, including hand grip and strength.
  • Dressing skills, such as undressing and putting items of clothing on.
  • Sensory advice related to engagement in functional tasks.
  • Advice for managing activities of daily living tasks such as independent eating and bathing.
  • Equipment provision

OTs within the team may work within a combination of nursery, home and clinic to complete 1:1 interventions and access visits to ensure that the environment meets the needs of the child.
