Pre-School Readiness

Pre-school readiness is having the skills to begin school and support a smooth transition into the school environment. This includes several skills including:

  • Toilet trained and able to go to the toilet by themselves.
  • Able to wash and dry their own hands.
  • Able to put on/ take off their coat and shoes.
  • Drink from a cup and feed themselves independently.
  • Be up to date with their childhood immunisations.
  • Have good attention and listening skills.
  • Holding a pencil and being able to mark make.
  • Appropriate social skills for building friendships.

Occupational Therapy can support children to develop the skills they require to become independent. If a professional known to your child, e.g, a nursery teacher is particularly worried about your child and you feel their physical development is delayed for their age, please ask them to refer to us detailing their concerns and you could be invited to one of our parent/carer workshops or into a clinic, if it is deemed essential that we must see your child in the first instance.

There are also other services that can support your child in the first instance. For example, your health visitor can provide support on potty/toilet training, sleep, behaviour and feeding. The school nursing team can also support with these skills.
